This release of FanControl offers a fancy new initialization mechanism. If all, or at least one, of the hardware interfaces for the fan are supported, it will scan for them on startup, and register them on the system. As such, the service will never have to be started manually. This, in my opinion, is a huge plus.

In amdgpu-fancontrol, unlike rsync, we do not have a CONFIG_SYSFS_PATH or a similar way to load this config file at run-time. Instead, I chose to cache an absolute path in a variable (AMDGPU_CONFIG_PATH) when loading fancontrol, and check whether it’s changed while calling pwmconfig to detect whether it needs to be reloaded.

I noticed an issue in radeonfb_pwm-fan when suspending and resuming, which is that the fan would rather speed up than slow down, to achieve full speed. To prevent this, I added a timer which resets the fan speed. This can be found in the amdgpu-fancontrol script as the section modprobe-fan-reset-timer (refer to make-amdgpu-fancontrol), where /etc/modules is included.

Since this is a fully automatic fan control, it is possible to generate the system-specific rules for the fancontrol. I noticed that if the fan is on and the system is not running for a while, the fan would just spin-down to a low speed. To prevent this, I would like to see the fan spinning-up to a high speed if the system is off (no video activity/no fan activity). For this purpose, the fan control have an abstracted state variable AMDGPU_FORCE. If the flag is set to 1, the fan will spin-up to a high speed. This can be seen in the section fancontrol-fancontrol-rule in amdgpu-fancontrol. This can be done by simply adding the line:

You can resolve this problem using the same logic for loading the sensors with /lib/systemd/system-sleep/. I decided to write a run script to run both pwmconfig and fancontrol at the same time with the same configuration parameters so that you don’t have to edit two files if you want to use manual fan control. Check out this script on Github .

Once again, it is important to make sure that the configuration file for both pwmconfig and fancontrol do not change from your initial settings (which may be determined by a BIOS setting).

If you use your N550JU as a server or any number of switches that this runs on, an additional login/user may be required. Otherwise, the command to control the fans might not work. So far I have only tested it with the login/user being root. Once logged in, type /etc/init.d/fancontrol restart to start the service. Once it is up and running, type /etc/init.d/fancontrol status to check and make sure that the fans have stopped, then type /etc/init.d/fancontrol restart again to go into full-blown fan-control mode.

There are lots of fans on any motherboard, and sometimes they don’t turn off correctly. When this happens, you can use the /etc/fancontrol configuration file to provide a master switch in case the fan does not turn off, but the problem might be easier to solve by enabling a service that turns the fan off when there is low CPU usage. There is a switch that turns off a fan that is not in use. This must be enabled on this service rather than the fan itself. There is no need to turn it off, since the fan will turn off anyway if it has not been using anything. If the switch is enabled, it will turn the fan off no matter what the fans own state is.

What is FanControl v124?

What is FanControl v124?

The GPU fan’s RPM is mostly controlled by the kernel’s thermal management subsystem and most of the time will not need any special adjustments. The CPU fan is mostly controlled by the cpu_vectors and the smp kernel parameter. With a little tweaking, it can be as low as 1 or 2 RPM. Finally, there is also the fan kernel parameter which affects it all and has the easiest interface. It accepts a comma-separated list of thresholds for the lowest and highest fan RPM’s and the number of seconds before or after it is set. This is the default of FanControl. There is usually no need to specify these manually. It is a recommended to set the highest RPM as a flat value.

FanControl requires you to start in order to see the results on the system. You have to go to the command line, type $ fanctl and verify if the tool is working. The smp kernel parameter is configured so that the CPU fan speed can’t be manually set. The fan is always controlled by the lowest value. To get a value based on S.M.A.R.T. temperature, you need to set the hwmon1/device/name field and select the hwmon1/device/temp and/or hwmon1/device/fan fields. Both are needed for the CPU. For the GPU, you can use either hwmon2/device/fan or hwmon1/device/temp and hwmon1/device/fan.

FanControl is a GUI-based tool for automating the fan control of your motherboard and CPU. It allows you to setup the fan curves and much more. The fan speed will be adjusted according to the available hardware. FanControl has the ability to define multiple min and max temperature levels. The CPU fan will be turned on only when the temperature is under a threshold and will be turned off once the temperature crosses the maximum threshold. If the temperature reaches a programmed threshold before it reaches the target maximum temperature and is not removed immediately with the CPU fan’s “off” setting, the fan will be turned off again. If the “off” setting is lower than the threshold, a warning message will be shown to remind you to turn off the fan manually if the temperature should reach the target maximum temperature. The kernel parameter “smp” is set so that the fan will not be able to be manually controlled by the user and will always stay at the lowest RPM. Please refer to this article for more information about the SMB set. What is Free FanControl v124 Download?

If you start the script in Windows, it will automatically launch FanControl. You will also be presented with the settings to enter if you have not yet configured a fan curve. Once this is done, FanControl can be started from its shortcut in the Windows Start menu or you can use the command line with the same results. The fan curves can be set up by:
